Last week (July 8-12), I spent four days in Los Angeles (Hollywood, specifically), attending the previews and two night performance run of Replaced: Six Short Musicals About Obsolescence. This was the culmination of one years' work with the New Musicals, Incorporated Core program. (The program proper started in September 2022, but I spent the previous summer working on three in depth lab programs: music, lyrics, and book.
After eight months of intense collaborative work, we were sorted into six teams for the final project: conceiving and writing a "Fifteen Minute Musical." I was on a team with Eric Christopher Jones (who wrote the book, the "play" part of the musical) and Kristen Egan O'Hare, who wrote the lyrics. I composed the music and we all collaborated on the overall artistic effort (including critiquing each others' contributions).
Our project was called "IQ: The Musical." It featured an alienated teenage daughter, a technocratic father, a threatening educational administrator, and an android crafted in the image of a late wife and mother. The video will be edited and published sometime in the next couple of months on Youtube, and I will certainly be publicizing it here and on social media. I am also considering recording a brief soundtrack with some of the talented singers I've met via the program, so stay tuned.
If you are thinking about enrolling in New Musicals, Inc, I recommend it highly.
