So I was just compiling for Reddit the advantages to being based in Minneapolis. We have:
Nautilus Music Theater which targets new artist development and does a periodic intensive Composer-Librettist workshop - I went to the final showcase and (speaking as someone just wrapping up the LA-based NMI core program) they are competitive. Robert Elhai (Thor, X-Men) is locally based and was one of the music directors for the most recent showcase.
The New Music Theater Exchange is the ongoing membership/collaboration organization. They meet at the Playwright's Center, which started here and has national and international reach and does a ton of new material development - so you can connect with book writers.
Theater Latte Da is the top local musical theater (I'm not counting the big Broadway touring shows) and they premiere significant works, such as the 12 Angry Men musical. There are many, many local theaters.
The Guthrie Theater is another internationally known institution, with a fascinating history - founded in the early '60s by Oxford-trained Shakespearean Sir Tyrone Guthrie who had become "disenchanted with Broadway." The Guthrie is maybe not as relevant for an aspiring writer but having an institution like that here raises the standards and sophistication across the scene.
Another related organization is the American Composer's Forum, started as the Minnesota Composer's Forum and like the Playwright's Center achieved international reach - still headquartered here.
Finally, the Minnesota Fringe is the largest non-juried and 3rd largest in the US. So you can get stuff performed.
