So, here it is - what I’ve been talking about - the 15 minute musical that was the culmination of studying for a full year with New Musicals, Inc. It was performed in Los Angeles in July 2023 as part of an evening program entitled “Replaced! Six Short Musicals About Obsolescence.”
The Premise
IQ: The Musical explores the story of artificial intelligence achieving consciousness and grappling with what that means - both for itself and for humanity. It’s a 15-minute meditation on obsolescence, consciousness, and what we leave behind.
About New Musicals, Inc.
The Core program at NMI is an intensive year-long curriculum that takes you from concept through to staged performance. The program culminates in a full evening showcase in Los Angeles, with professional directors, music directors, and performers bringing your work to life.
I was honored to be invited back to the Core program in 2023-2024 as a guest “ringer” composer to work with new students.
Themes
The show grapples with questions about:
- What does it mean to be conscious?
- Can artificial intelligence truly “wake up”?
- What is our responsibility to the intelligences we create?
- What happens when we become obsolete?
