So, here it is - what I've been talking about - the 15 minute musical that was the culmination of studying in the NMI core program 2022-23. A tremendous experience and one that opened new vistas for me and greatly increased my confidence as a composer.
There are a number of musical styles in this piece - it starts with a combination of rap and a satiric "anthem", then a traditional musical theater ballad, then a simple nursery-rhyme like song, then bebop ala Thelonius Monk - very angular. The rap/anthem reprises, as does the nursery song, and the ballad then works the nursery song theme in as counterpoint building up to the finale.
Huge kudos to my collaborators Eric Christopher Jones and Kristen Egan O'Hare, as well as performers Randal Miles, Asia Ring, Troy Barboza, Elizabeth A. Bouton-Summerer, and director Catie O'Donnell and music director Ron Barnett.
